From the Governor’s Briefing in New York City: 

OVERVIEW

  • Top 20 zip codes at 5.5% infection rate.
  • Statewide infection rate is 1.01%.
  • 8 deaths reported over the last 24 hours.
  • 636 hospitalizations.
  • Current hotspots: 
    - Western NY: 1.2%
    - Broome: 3.1% 
    - Orange: 4.7% 
    - Rockland: 6.2%
    - Brooklyn: 2.5%
  • The Governor stated infection is increasing is hotspots because residents are not complying with safety protocols.

SCHOOLS

  • Schools in hotspots will close tomorrow.

RELIGIOUS GATHERINGS

  • NYC’s plan leaves religious institutions open.
  • The Governor is meeting with the ultra-Orthodox community tomorrow.
  • If compliance is not satisfactory, the state will mandate closures.

ENFORCEMENT

  • The state will take over enforcement in all hotspot areas, and local governments will provide personnel.

HOTSPOTS

  • Zip code identification is a template; other methods are being looked into to better analyze data for infection rates and spread.
  • Schools can also be comprised of students from various zip codes.
  • Non-essential businesses and public spaces with close once a better method is determined.

  • On why schools are not being closed in Rockland and Orange counties: Governor Cuomo is speaking with community leaders in those regions tomorrow. Closures will occur if necessary.
